Solo Exhibition by Ross McMaster
The gallery’s February exhibition presents the work of Ross McMaster, a Lismore artist with a background in graphic design and a lifetime exploring his personal beliefs. The latter has lead Ross on an expedition through historical archives, mainly in the context of the religion of his upbringing. His research made apparent ‘facts’ that tore at his childhood concept of the Christian Church - the Church as Institution - its leadership, both righteous and an Institution in itself.
Ross’s work in print, painting and montage provides layer upon layer of his findings in the context of historical events. Just as he proposes there is a duality to the Church as Institution - the message and the apparent reality of past errors / hypocrisy / malevolence - Ross’s work presents both something that is not a ‘pretty picture’, but something that in composition, colour and an artistic style that draws heavily from its graphic impact, is actually a visual feast.
Ross does not tear down ‘faith’ in his work. He does not attack spirituality. His work explores the validity of the institutions of organised religion in contemporary society and their political agendas.
